Location

Have you ever heard the name Latvia before? Read an article about it online and even typed "Where is Latvia" in your web-browser? If you're currently searching for it, you should already suspect, that it must be a country somewhere in the world. And you are not wrong!
Let's start with its location on the globe!

Alright then! On the picture above you can see the exact location of Latvia (The little country painted in red) Just from the first glance you can clearly see, that thankfully it is not located in Russia. Actually, we were a part of the USSR back in the day, but we gained our independence from Russia on the 21st of August 1991. Now Latvia is an independent and awesome country.
Now, let's get back on the topic, and zoom-in the globe a bit to see where is Latvia on the scale of Europe!
Latvia on map
See the red-white-red painted area in the top right corner on the map stated above? Yep, that is the same country as on the globe in the first picture.
If you can guess from the picture above, Latvia is a part of the Northen Europe, and, more precisely, the middle one of the three Baltic states, also known as the pearl of the Baltics. (We're proud of the name)
Now that we've covered the location of this country in the scale of Europe, let's take a look at the county itself.

Did you know, that because of the shape of the Gulf of Riga we are called Žirga galvas - Horse heads - by Lithuanians? (Read more in the jokes section of this website! ...Coming soon)
And now - a little bit about the geography!
To start off, Latvia is bordered to the north by Estonia, to the south by Lithuania, to the east by the Russian Federation, and to the southeast by Belarus, and it shares a maritime border to the west with Sweden. The longest river on Latvian territory is Gauja (Though the longest river flowing through Latvian territory is the Daugava), and the largest city is Riga. The rest you can find on the map given above. Easy!
Well, to be honest, I do not have much information left to add here and I hope that you won't have any problems with the question "where is Latvia" after reading this article. Nevertheless, I encourage you to explore other topics about Latvia written on this blog!

Best, Rihards Zeila
